An initiate in the service of the Ordos Malleus Kamiel Nazzal has proven to be an apt leader of his Crusader Squad. While his battle group was passing through a nearby system they were requisitioned by an Inquisitor stationed in the Caldoss system.

Nazzal and his Crusader squad are sent to a nearby planet to secure a foothold for future operations.

The snow crunched beneath boots of the Crusaders as they poured out of the Valkyrie. Taking up defensive positions around the door to the craft their storm shields hummed to life. Nazzal descended out of the hold of the craft. The landing had gone smoothly and there were no reports of foes in the area. Moving to the head of the squad he strapped on his helmet and the mission HUD flickers to life displaying the squad status and coordinates of the mission goal.
The towers of the surrounding temple structure unnerved the Crusader. Something about them seemed off but he couldn’t put his finger on it.
Nazzal clicked his vox on
“Squad moving off of landing zone”
The small group cautiously made their way into the cavernous main building in the complex. The Inquisitor deemed any artifacts that could be found to be of the highest importance, securing the grounds could wait. The strange runes on the wall of the building were not familiar to Nazzal, odd circle and line pattern etchings filled the walls.
The Crusaders fanned out at his signal to clear the room. It only seemed to be a decrepit entry way but you could never be to sure in these old places. One by one the squad announced their sectors as clear. Scanning the room Nazzal made note of the smaller branching corridors but ignored them for now. Motioning to a cracked slab door opposite the entry he barked.
“Get that open, imagine what we are looking for is in there.”
Jumping to action two Crusaders unsheathed their power swords. Carving their way into the next room the Ordos troops rushed into the next room to secure it. Nazzal followed quickly making sure to mentally check all of the reports from the members of his team.
In the center of the room there was a grand dais. Held aloft on a pedestal was a smooth orb that appeared to be glowing a faint green. The room was deathly still except for the faint pulsing of the orb.
“Secure the artifact and return to the Valkyrie. I don’t like the feeling of the this forsaken place.”
As a pair of Crusaders made their way to the dais Nazzal turned his attention to the rest of the room. It was oddly shaped with slanting walls and a vaulted ceiling. Certainly not an Imperial structure.
There was a shout and alarms on the HUD started flashing. Whirling to center of the room Nazzal stumbled back. Standing in the middle of the room was an avatar of death itself. A skeletal monstrosity stood with long scythe dripping with the blood of a fallen Crusader. It’s cold glowing eyes did not look away from Nazzal as it offhandedly cut down another one of his unit. In shock Nazzal could only watch as it lifted the orb. His heart dropped into his stomach, this could not be good.
Suddenly the temple roared to life, they were everywhere. Metallic skeletons rose from every nook silently making their way towards him and his men. Nazzal stood in horror his mind blank, what was happening.
He was jarred from his stupor as the screams for orders and the dying shouts of his men assaulted his vox.
“GET OUT! RUN!” Their commander screamed.
They scattered, abandoning swords in the bodies of the horrors. Forgotten as the silent death shrugged off the blades.
Nazzal broke running for the door. Scrambling through the portal he raced for the entry to the building only stopping when he realized no one was following him. He turned seeing only a few of his men made it through the door, the rest dead.
“COME ON! GET TO THE VALKYRIE!”
Running back he grabbed the nearest soldier and threw him out of the way of a sinister blade that cut down another one of his comrades. Bracing his storm shield he pushed the monster back causing it to tumble back. Turning he sprinted with the two remaining members of his squad for the door. Bursting into the courtyard the scene was no less horrifying. A member of the flight crew lay dead as the other fired his bolter out the back of the ship. The grounds were alive with flashes of energy. The ships armor tore away when the blasts struck it. Then a stray shot caused one of his men to collapse with a burning hole in his chest. Throwing all his might into one throw he threw his last Crusader onto the entry ramp of the Valkyrie. Turning he held his shield high deflecting the shots now pouring out of the temple. Backing on to the gangway he shouted at the pilot.
“Get us out of here!”
As the engines roared to life and the ship rose into the sky Nazzal looked back down at the courtyard. There stood the skeleton from the dais. Its lifeless eyes staring deep into his soul. It slowly raised it scythe and a beam shot out at incredible speeds. Nazzal ducked behind the cover of this storm shield but didn’t feel any impact. Looking up to his horror he saw the tumbling body of his last friend tumbling to earth. As the doors closed and the ship rocketed away from the carnage Nazzal collapsed to the floor. What had happened? Why had the Emperor forsaken his men so?
He sat in a daze until the ship landed in the hanger of the Inquisitors vessel. Awakened by the jarring of the touchdown he stood and walked from the vessel. His emptiness and fear began to burn away as he walked the halls back to his crew quarters. A burning hatred filled him, never again he swore. Never again would he be caught so helpless.
